Solo travel for women is becoming increasingly popular as travel companies are designing experiences specifically for women who travel alone. With mantras like “travel solo, not alone,” the tours invite women on trips around the world, where they can explore with like-minded females. Participants are connected before the trip on Facebook, and a welcome dinner the first night of the adventure helps the women get to know each other even better.
Land destinations include Bali, Cambodia, Brazil, China, Jordan, Morocco, Peru, Italy, Tahiti Spain, or Portugal. Countries more easily reached by sea include Colombia, the Galapagos Islands, Tahiti, the Panama Canal. These vacations take place on smaller boats, which encourage comradery, and where the staff integrates strategies like tables with odd-numbered chairs and social mixers to facilitate mixing among the travelers. Just like tours for families or couples are offered for different durations, trips for women traveling alone span over a long weekend for a foreign get away or stretch into longer vacations.
A recent article by Lonely Planet’s Andrea Smith explains the experiences this way: “Women on the tours get to experience authentic cultures and uncover hidden gems in the company of other women, and they get to travel in a way that is safe, inclusive and enjoyable, while also being adventurous and exciting.” (March 6, 2019).
